Lichens of the Chilean Fog Deserts
Frequent dense fog along the dry, northern Chilean coast facilitates the existence of a rich lichen flora in what appears to be nearly barren sand and rock. With support from the National Geographic Society Committee for Research and Exploration, collaborators Daniel Stanton, Reinaldo Vargas and I are studying how fog influences lichen communities, functional traits and photobiont genetic structure .
